Parkrun & Community Running

Running doesn't have to be something you do alone. One of the most powerful things about running is the sense of community that can come with it, and parkrun is one of the most welcoming ways to experience that. Whether you run, jog, walk or volunteer, I want you to feel confident stepping into community running in a way that feels right for you.

What is parkrun?

Parkrun is a free, weekly 5k event that takes place every Saturday morning at 9am in parks and open spaces across the UK and beyond. It's open to everyone and you can go at your own pace - walking or running and everything in-between. There's no cut-off time and no judgement.

You don't have to be fast

One of the biggest myths about parkrun is that it's only for confident runners. In reality, parkrun welcomes:

- Walkers

- Runners

- People on Couch to 5k

- Parents with buggies (if the route is suitable)

- People returning after a break

- Volunteers

What to expect on your first parkrun

Your first parkrun can feel daunting, but it's much simpler than it looks. You simply:

- Register online once

- Bring your barcode

- Turn up a little before 9am

- Listen to a short briefing

- Move around the 5k course in your way

There's always a friendly team of volunteers to help.

Why community running helps

Running with others, even if you're not running together, can make a huge difference. Community running offers:

- Encouragement an motivation

- A sense of belonging

- Gentle accountability

- Familiar faces

- A reason to show up

You don't have to chat or socialise if you don't want to, just being there counts.

Local running groups

Alongside parkrun, many areas have informal groups or beginner-friendly clubs. These can be brilliant for building confidence, learning new routes and feeling supported. You don't need to be "good enough", groups exist to help people grow.

Volunteering counts too

Not ready to run yet? Volunteering at parkrun is a wonderful way to feel part of the community while building confidence. You'll meet people, get encouragement, and see that everyone is welcome, at every pace.

You don't need to wait until you're fitter, faster or braver to be part of a running community. Showing up as you are is enough. Community running isn't about competition, it's about connection. And sometimes, that's what makes all the difference.

Move together. Belong together.
