The Transformative Benefits of Yoga

In a world that often moves too fast, finding stillness can feel like a luxury. Between work deadlines, personal commitments, and the constant hum of digital distractions, we rarely get the chance to pause. This is where yoga steps in; not just as a form of physical exercise, but as a holistic practice that nurtures body, mind, and spirit.
If you follow my Instagram account, in amongst the running, you'll have seen my posts about yoga. Now this isn't a post aimed to convert you to yoga, it's just a sharing of my journey, what switched me on AND off to yoga and why I practice.
My first memory of being in a yoga class isn't actually of my first yoga class, it's the first ENJOYABLE one I went to. I used to work in a stockbrokers in Leeds, with our Head Office right across the road from the old International Pool. I took out a gym membership to use on my lunch breaks. One day I noticed they had a yoga class, which started straight after work, so why not........
The class was in a downstairs basement room. It was dark, with no windows and had stacks of chairs around the edge. After the first class, I was hooked - it was literally the BEST yoga class I'd ever been to! Why?...... the teacher, I just connected with her straight away (I was way too shy to have said anything back then), but she was completely on my wavelength. I've no idea if she was a new or experienced teacher, I can't even remember much of what we did in class (it was 20 years ago!), but I felt comfortable, content and for the first time ever, found a few moments where I could quieten my mind......all that whilst enjoying a great physical workout too.
Since I left Leeds, I've only ever found that same connection with 3 other teachers. The connection isn't something I can explain, it could be their style, warmness, choice of music, or a whole multitude of things. For me, it's a bit like finding a partner - when you've got a great one, everything just clicks!
When you read my reasons below for practicing yoga, just keep in mind that without first finding the right teacher and style of yoga (I'll save that one for another post), I wouldn't have stuck at my practice long enough to feel any of these benefits.
1. Yoga makes your body strong and healthy (when you find a regular practice).
It is more than just stretching, it’s a powerful tool for building strength and endurance. From holding planks in Vinyasa flows to mastering the stillness of Warrior poses, your muscles are constantly being challenged.
2.Yoga increases your flexibility - but it’s not just about touching your toes.
Improved flexibility can ease tension in tight muscles, reduce the risk of injury, and help you move more freely in everyday life. Plus, it feels great to release the physical stiffness that often builds up from sitting at desks or driving.
3. Yoga helps you quieten your mind and can bring a sense of calm.
After a yoga class I always find my state of mind has shifted. It’s like I've had a spring clean in my head. Some things have fallen into place, some things are just not there anymore at all, or I have a completely different perspective. I try to start each session with an open mind. I leave any worries outside and try to stay present.
4. Yoga helps you to accept whatever life brings to your table
Life experiences are not always positive. Difficult things happen to us all and sometimes we will be in pain. Yoga has taught me that everything changes. Both the positive but also the painful things in life come and go. Knowing this and understanding this on a deeper level makes it easier to accept and stay present and positive.
5. Yoga helps you to make better choices
Becoming healthier and experiencing all the benefits of yoga will make you more aware and able to choose things in life that support this positive journey. You will slowly become more aware how things influence you. You will find you naturally want to make changes to your diet, choosing foods which support your health and yoga practice. You may see this in your friendship groups too, spending more time with friends who have a positive influence, having more strength to move away from negative situations.
Yoga is more than a workout; it’s a way of living. It invites us to slow down, reconnect and care for ourselves on a deeper level. So maybe take a deep breath, roll out your mat, and start your journey. Your body, mind, and soul will thank you.
Remember to take a little time for you.
